Improved modeling of land surface fluxes by assimilation of remote sensing data

An accurate knowledge of surface soil moisture and actual evapotranspiration vital for hydrology. In this study, a lumped surface-ground water coupled model was developed. AMSRE surface soil moisture products were bias corrected using linear transformation, and the ensemble were enerated using the Clayton copula. Actual evapotranspiration was estimated using the MODIS products. The satellite retrieved products (surface soil moisture and actual evaporation) were assimilated into the hydrological model. The model was validated by comparing simulated surface and root zone soil moisture content with the measured data at an experimental site located in South India in the period 2008-2011. A good agreement was observed for surface and root zone soil moisture. Further, a good match was found between the simulated groundwater levels with the observed groundwater levels.
